The City of Darien has updated its rules regarding commercial and large vehicles parked on private property. Below are the key points residents should know:
What's Prohibited
- Semitractors, semitrailers, and Class 3+ vehicles over 10,000 lbs. may not be parked or stored on private property.
- Farm and earth-moving equipment (bobcats, bulldozers, road graders, tractors, cranes, brush chippers, and similar machinery) may not be stored on private property.
- Tow trucks, wreckers, flatbeds, and vehicle carriers may not be parked on private property except while actively loading or unloading.
- No more than two commercial vehicles may be stored outdoors overnight on any residential lot.
What's Still Allowed
- Heavy-duty pickup trucks (2500- and 3500-series) with a manufacturer GVWR up to 14,000 lbs. are permitted.
- Vehicles actively loading or unloading merchandise or passengers are permitted.
- Military vehicles — up to two, owned by a private resident or veterans' organization — are permitted for noncommercial, ceremonial use.
- One construction or dump trailer owned by a resident may be parked in a side yard driveway, subject to size limits: max 16 ft. long, 6 ft. tall, and GVWR under 16,000 lbs.

Compliance Deadline: Legal, non-conforming property owners currently not in compliance have until March 2, 2027 to bring their property into conformance with the new rules.
