"Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it. If you don’t know history it’s as if you were born yesterday. If you were born yesterday, then any leader can tell you anything. Study History!

During 2026, we will mark several significant milestones in our nation’s history, and our City of Darien is beginning to plan meaningful ways of recognizing and commemorating these important anniversaries.

Probably the anniversary most of us are familiar with is the approaching 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States; a moment that invites reflection on our shared history, democratic ideals, and the responsibilities we carry forward for future generations. Our current planning for this event includes our Darien Lions Club July 4th Parade, which will hopefully showcase all of our community organizations as they each demonstrate their recognition of this historic event. In addition to this parade, Darien plans to introduce a “Hometown Heroes” recognition program. This initiative will allow individual residents an opportunity to honor a family member or fellow resident who is currently serving or has served our country in any branch of the United States military. Honorees will be recognized with commemorative banners featuring their honoree’s name and photo, which will be displayed on city streetlights throughout the city from Memorial Day through Veterans Day.

We will also observe the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on our country. To honor the lives lost and the lasting impact of that day, Darien is considering holding a silent memorial parade, similar to the moving tribute held five years ago on the 20th anniversary. This solemn event would once again provide our residents an opportunity to come together in remembrance, reflection, and unity.

As we work to develop these plans, we look forward to partnering with our local service groups and our surrounding communities in carrying out other activities to commemorate these two events. Community involvement will be essential in ensuring these commemorations are meaningful, inclusive, and reflective of Darien’s values.

Residents who have ideas or would like to share suggestions are encouraged to email me directly at jmarchese@darienil.gov. Together, we can honor our past, recognize those who have served, and celebrate the history that connects us as a community and as a nation.
