Darien is committed to supporting monarch butterflies and other pollinators! The City of Darien is excited to recognize the month of June as Monarch Butterfly Month.

The monarch butterfly is highly celebrated as the official state insect of Illinois. During June, adult butterflies are busy laying eggs and caterpillars are actively hatching and feeding on milkweed

Some family-friendly activities:

  • Monarch Life Cycle Hunt: Look for eggs, caterpillars, chrysalises, and adult butterflies on milkweed plants.
  • Butterfly Journal: Record sightings, sketch monarchs, and note which flowers they visit.
  • Nature Photography Challenge: Try photographing monarchs at different stages of their life cycle.
  • Butterfly Crafts: Create monarch-inspired paintings, paper crafts, or garden decorations
