The severe storm that moved through our community on July 4 brought an
extraordinary amount of rainfall to Darien. Approximately six inches of rain fell across
the city, including nearly 2.4 inches in just one hour. This intensity of rainfall
overwhelmed drainage systems in many areas, resulting in significant street ponding
and, for some residents, devastating flooding.

For those whose homes were damaged, whether from water entering through
window wells, seepage, backup from the DuPage County sanitary system, or other
storm-related flooding, please know that my thoughts are with you. I understand the
stress, disruption, and uncertainty that come with experiencing this kind of concern,
especially during what should have been a holiday spent with family and friends.
Throughout the storm and the hours that followed, our Public Works crews were
out across the community responding wherever they were needed. They monitored
flooded roadways, assisted in areas experiencing significant ponding, and worked to
help keep residents safe until conditions improved. I want to thank our dedicated
employees for their commitment and long hours serving our community during this
challenging period.

As a city, we recognize the hardships many families are now facing. While we
cannot undo the damage caused by this historic rainfall, we are committed to supporting
our residents throughout the recovery process and providing assistance wherever
possible. Earlier this week, we distributed a special edition of our Direct Connect email
newsletter with important recovery information, including who to contact for various
types of assistance. We also announced the placement of roll-off dumpsters at
strategic locations throughout the city to help residents dispose of flood-damaged
materials. If you have not yet reviewed this information, I encourage you to do so and
take advantage of the resources contained in this newsletter. We remain committed to
providing timely updates and ensuring that residents have access to the information and
services they need.

Darien has always been a community that comes together during difficult times.
I have no doubts that spirit will once again help our neighbors through this difficult
period. On behalf of the City Council and our entire staff, thank you for your patience,
resilience, and support of one another as we move forward together.
