The Darien Police Department is pleased to announce the promotion of Sergeant Mike Lorek to the rank of Deputy Chief of Police, effective November 14, 2026.

Deputy Chief Lorek joined the Darien Police Department on September 27, 2001. He began his career as a patrol officer and was promoted to Sergeant in August 2016. Since then, he has served both as a patrol sergeant and detective sergeant.

Throughout his 25-year career, Deputy Chief Lorek has served in numerous assignments, including SWAT sniper, field training officer, juvenile officer, crisis intervention team member, evidence technician, and firearms instructor. He is also a certified lead homicide investigator.

In April 2008, Deputy Chief Lorek received a Life Saving Award for his actions during a medical emergency at a local business. Upon arrival, he found an unresponsive man who was not breathing and had no detectable pulse. Deputy Chief Lorek immediately began CPR and continued until fire personnel arrived and took over treatment. Due to his actions, the patient went on to make a full recovery. His quick actions and response played a critical role in saving the man's life.

Deputy Chief Lorek earned his bachelor's degree from Western Illinois University in 2001. In 2020, he completed the School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University's Center for Public Safety, a program focused on preparing law enforcement supervisors for executive leadership.

Please join us in congratulating Deputy Chief Lorek on his promotion and wishing him continued success in his new role.
