City of Darien: Police Social Worker Program
The City of Darien and the Darien Police Department proudly launched an innovative Police Social Worker Program in July 2025 with the hiring of our first full-time police social worker. This program addresses the growing number of calls involving mental health crises, substance use, homelessness, and other non-criminal matters that require specialized, compassionate care.
Program Highlights
Purpose & Background
- Responds to the need for long-term assistance, resource coordination, and trauma-informed follow-up.
- Works to improve outcomes for vulnerable residents, reduce repeat calls for service, and build greater community trust.
- Reflects a national trend of integrating social services into public safety to better serve complex community needs.
The City of Darien is committed to programs that enhance safety, well-being, and trust in our community. Early results show the Police Social Worker Program is making a meaningful difference, demonstrating the vital role social workers play in modern policing.
We look forward to continuing this work and supporting all residents in need. For more information or to make a referral, please contact the Darien Police Department.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When should I call 911 vs. contacting the Social Worker?
A: Always dial 911 for immediate emergencies, crimes in progress, or situations with a threat of physical harm. Once the scene is safe, responding officers can request the Social Worker to assist. For non-emergency support or follow-up on an existing case, contact the Social Worker directly through the department’s main line.
Q: Is there a cost to work with the Police Social Worker?
A: No. This service is provided at no cost to ensure residents have access to the support and resources they need.
Q: Is my conversation with Sabrina confidential?
A: The Social Worker maintains a high standard of privacy and follows professional ethical guidelines. There are legal limits to confidentiality, such as mandatory reporting of child or elder abuse or immediate threats of harm to self or others. These boundaries will be explained at your first meeting.
Q: Can the Social Worker help with housing or financial aid?
A: While she does not provide direct financial assistance or housing vouchers, the Social Worker acts as a “resource navigator,” connecting residents with county, state, or non-profit programs and helping them through the application process.
Q: Does the Social Worker only respond to mental health calls?
A: No. She assists with a wide range of life challenges, including grief support, domestic issues, helping senior citizens access services, and supporting families managing substance use concerns.
Q: Can I request the Social Worker be present during a police interaction?
A: Yes. If you are interacting with an officer and believe social work support would be helpful, you may request her presence. If she is on duty and available, she may respond to the scene.
