This September marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001; a day that forever changed our nation and in many ways, changed each of us.
For those of us who remember that morning, we can recall where we were, what we were doing, and the sense of disbelief and fear that followed. We watched as our sense of security was shaken and as an attack on our nation reminded us of something we too often take for granted; our safety and our way of life are not guaranteed.
September 11 made us more aware of our vulnerability. It changed the way many of us traveled, went to work, entered public buildings, and thought about the world around us. But perhaps, and most importantly, it reminded us how much we depend on one another, and on the men and women who stand ready to protect us when we need them most.
Twenty-five years later, we remember the thousands of innocent people who lost their lives that fateful day. We remember families who were forever changed by their loss, and we remember the extraordinary courage of the firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and other first responders who ran toward danger while others were trying to escape.
To commemorate the 25th anniversary, the City of Darien, in partnership with the Darien Business Alliance, will conduct a “Silent Parade” on Friday, September 11, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Fire and Police Departments from more than 20 municipalities will participate. The vehicles will travel from Beechnut Avenue along 71st Street to Clarendon Hills Road.
We invite residents to gather along 71st Street to watch the parade and take part in this community remembrance. Our theme is simple and meaningful: “Darien Never Forgets 911.”
Please come out and join your neighbors as we pause to remember all those who perished on September 11, 2001, reflect on how that day changed our lives, and honor the first responders who continue to work every day to keep our families and communities safe.
As we mark 25 years, may we never forget the lives lost, the sacrifices made, the courage displayed, and the importance of looking out for one another.
